Session 3 – Animal Sounds

Today we told John all about our recent visit to Belfast Zoo.

John asked us about the different animals we saw

The list of animals was pretty long …

We also discussed the sounds that the animals made and we tried to re-inact them.

Corey and Kevin heard the Sea lions making ‘ar, ar, ar’ sounds and splashing sounds.

Cora heard the elephants rocking and thumping their tails.

Daniel heard the elephant making a ‘shrumping’ sound with its trunk.

Curtis heard birds tweeting and ‘swishing’ sounds when they were flying.

Finn heard the lion roar – rrrrrrraaarrrrrrr

Kevin heard the monkey banging on the windows and ‘ooooh ooooh oh oh’ sounds.

Kevin performing the sound that a monkey made in the zoo.

John discussed with the class, what might the sound of an animal or bird look like?

The parrots talking resembled a curved line to Kevin because the ‘sound went from low to high and it was a short sound’.

Daniel drew a series of circles of different sizes joined by lines for the sound of the parrots. The sounds ‘went from loud to quiet … it was like the parrots were talking to each other.’

John set us the task of producing our own graphic score for an animal of our choice.

Caitlin – Monkey

“I was imagining the monkey making ‘oh, oh’ sounds, that is why I picked an O [to draw]. I drew a line because it was joining the sound together. I the red sound was an angry sound and the purple sound was a lower sound.”

Corey – Gorilla

‘I drew this one because the gorilla sound was like an ‘O’. It went from quiet to angry.’

Oscar – Parrots

“I drew this shape because it looked like a parrot’s beak. The triangle is getting bigger as the sound is getting louder and angrier.”
