Today I joined the children to continue exploring in the grounds of the school, but before going outside, we talked about how those early explorers the children had been finding out about, might document what they saw. Lots of drawings and paintings of plants and animals would have been made.
With this in mind we went out on a mission to find specimens to document……
Los of serious searching took place and lots of specimens were found:
How will we get this inside?
There was huge excitement being outside and some children didn’t want to go back in!
Our next task was to record by looking carefully at the specimens. We looked at the shape, the texture and the way the plant was joined together – its structure.
All this meant looking very carefully at what we were drawing, but it was worth all the effort.
Next I introduced watercolour paints and paper. We talked a little about these – the fact that watercolour paper is special and very absorbent – the paint is soaked up by the paper. The paint itself is special because we can add water to the colour and the paint gets lighter….. the more water added the the lighter the colour. We call this diluting the paint.
The children found out how to get light blue, grey and found many different shades of green!
What lovely colours! The roots of the plant were observed and painted!
Here’s more of the wonderful paintings made today!
And look even the tissue was beautiful!
