Beautiful Spring weather presented us with the opportunity to get outside for the final day of our project. I suggested that the children make a silhouette of their whole body this time and to find a way of suspending it in the grounds of the school……

All this meant we had to get to work quickly. The classroom became a hive of activity with EVERY  spare piece of floor being utilised for the activity of drawing round each other’s bodies. The children worked well together, in pairs  for this task.

Laying very still was essential!

Drawing round the shape of your friend can be very tricky especially round the hands and finger.

But look at the how hard the children worked and with smiles on their faces. It was fun.

We even noticed great shapes and silhouettes as we worked!

Working with white chalk to trace the shape was better than pencil on the blue paper.

Next the children cut out these shapes, which were as big as themselves and this was done carefully with a lot of concentration.

Some fantastic body shapes were created both the shape they cut (POSITIVE SHAPE) and the shape left behind (NEGATIVE SHAPE).

Teacher Dearbhla asked the children to line up and get ready to take these silhouettes outside to suspend in the spaces around the school.

Ben fixed his silhouette to the fence with tape and a loose branch!

The we ‘eyed up’ the floaty blue shapes, noticing how big or small they appeared to be, depending how far away they were…

Back in the classroom the deflated silhouettes sat at desks, lay on table or floor and some were folded up carefully and taken home!
