Review: precious objects revisited

Jessica2

I spent a lot of time looking at the children’s images of precious objects from home. In communication with Mrs Wilson, she was able to give me remote access to the most recent batch of images and I made notes and screengrabs for myself to look at offline. It was really useful to see the work. With photography, this ability to share images is so important or I would have a very limited amount of visual feedback. There was so much good work and so many fascinating images. I was really impressed by their selection of objects. The brief had been to revisit their precious objects and take photos with an emphasis on different lighting, backgrounds, composition and focus. A lot of the work showed huge improvements in all of these technical areas and a more creative and relaxed approach with the camera. Some of the children had been really careful to use similar objects, others didn’t have access to them for various reasons but the choice of object seemed to be more considered. The only slightly baffling thing is the issue of focus. It doesn’t seem to be as important to the children -or as obvious -as I would expect. It’s something really interesting to consider. As an artist working with photography, I feel that a certain level of blur is perfectly acceptable but I want to be able to use it creatively. Maybe that is the only thing that I am querying -the level of awareness rather than the blurriness itself.

It’s definitely a head scratcher alright……
