Week 2 Seeing sounds

week3abstractingsoundWe thought about the sounds that we heard last week and thought about how to represent these sounds visually. I have been thinking about language and how letters and words can abstract reality and be understood. Mrs Wilson and I have been looking at the books that the children are reading together -like Roald Dahl -thinking about words and descriptions of sound. How music is shaped into scores using abstract notes on staves. It’s a big concept to take in. Our challenge for now was to find a way of turning sounds into shapes. I used a chalk slate and quickly found that I was running out of room as I tried to show the duration of different sounds as well as the different layers that I could hear.

It’s not easy to do but the children make it look easy.
