takeover artist takeover

I have been taken over by artist takeover @kidsownpublishing or is it hashtag kidsownpublishing – my ancient macbook doesn’t even have an exposed hashtag key…must be buried somewhere – will have to seek it out.

I did this doodle one time I was talking on the phone…looks like a friendly takeover by owls||clowns …who have been edging my thoughts lately, at first glance a clown might be an opposite archetype to an owl…the overlap of clown and owl occupy an intriguing space. One of the most compelling things about collaboration is how it throws up alternate chimera.

In the background I have been pondering both the creative and the collaborative process – it seems to me somehow like tracking – picking up from Curtis’s arrows, one found one drawn, the findings lead you – your senses are alerted a particular way/thing/- allowing other related things to cumulate about you – you follow almost blindly eyes open and looking in – art is tracking! exposure hidden finding

Today the computer in the classroom had trouble loading collaborate so we continued with facetime and ipads… lots to learn there also…but we did manage to have a play with a sketch app.

Students played with the tools working in pairs and finding out what they could do, I was able to squint at them via Ms Davey’s phone…am dying to see the results, though they were following my instructions each student used the app in a very different way.

Here is a “side by side” drawing combining Curtis “drawn arrow” and my “undergrowth” app doodle

Looking and layers

photo-on-10-10-2016-at-13-27

Today we talked about the upcoming visit to see David Hockney’s I Draw I do Exhibition at the Mac (tomorrow)

We talked about looking and layers

David Hockney is totally preoccupied by looking. He has illustrated 6 fairy tales from the brother’s Grimm….the first story is all about a princess who can see everything and everywhere, a young man wants to marry her and she says she can only marry someone who is able to escape her view, he gets 3 chances to conceal himself and eventually he manages to hide where she can’t see him.

We examined Hockney’s drawing technique, how he builds layers of mark-making, and how he can reveal the hidden boy in all of his pictures by masking him in semi-transparent layers:

We are going to experiment with processes inspired by David Hockney’s techniques.

We have been practicing drawing in layers on the collaborate whiteboard

On our trip to Mount Stewart in the undergrowth Curtis found an arrow, with feathers , his avatar now holds the staff of the blue flame.

Andrew’s photographs were of mushrooms, leaves and a tree – here we are trying out some layers

Dean draws cartoons of characters with special powers and attributes, his symbol has axe head horns, but there are more characters coming into play on the whiteboard…

Underway

dreamingcollaborate

We are underway at Killard House….

We have visited Mount Stewart together – year 10s and year 9s and us running about the lake in opposite directions with iPads photographing all kinds of things

Ms W Davey and I have had a session in the Collaborate and Face-time parallel universes

We have faced off the technological demons

We have just had our first interactive session with year 10s

Julie has visited David Hockney’s I draw I do at the Mac, Belfast. Ms W Davey will be visiting with year 10s anon. We are interested in his drawing technique, combining photographs and drawing, David Hockney says he is deeply grateful for his eyes oo – they continue to give him so much pleasure….he has a lot to say about looking…

Hockney has also designed theatre sets, and in his early painting he often treated the canvas as a stage, where pictorial action takes place. I think it will be interesting for us to think about these ideas as our work together progresses.

We are working with Layers and Avatars …. Year 10 sent me some self portraits when they were still Year 9, the were surprised to see such ‘old drawings’ of themselves cut out and greeting them again all the way from my desktop – time and space travelling….
