Symbol for trees on a map
We decided that this might be because even though many places had oak wood in their names, the most numerous variety of tree was a fir, particularly in forests.
Searching for trees
The class cross-referenced their finds on the map by first using map view in googlemaps to find selected locations containing the word “derry” and then switching to satellite view to see if there were any trees or woods left in that area.
They made links between their local landscape and deforestation and we talked about the rainforest and habitat.
Looking for oak woods
Derrykeighan; Derryloran; Eshnadarragh; Derrycrin; Derrylinn; Derrytrasna; Derrybeg; Derryadd; Derrynoose; Upper Ballinderry
These are just some of the places we found on the map.
Where have all the trees gone?
On maps, we looked for placenames on the map including this word in various forms: derry/ derragh. There was huge competition to find new names to add to the list.
