Starting to change

listeningback

The children have been taking photos every day. They go outside first thing and use the first photo to help them to remember what they were taking photos of. It took them a while to get into a healthy routine but they have sorted themselves out. they even got their photos laminated so that they can keep them dry outside.

Mrs Wilson said that it was a real buzz when they went outside. By the second day there was a group at the apple tree and she said she heard someone say “Oh look, my photo has changed already.”

I was really interested in finding out what the children had picked to take photos of so we spent some time feeding back about that. There is real diversity in the choices, although only one person in the class decided to photograph people.

The children went outside to listen and came back. I asked them where the sound was interesting. We thought about ways to record what they had heard -writing, drawing, making sound recordings, telling me about what they have been doing.

We decided to try recording sounds outside in four different places: in the pkayground, the wildlife garden, the back of the school and at the school gates. The recordings were made by different means -various kindles and ipads, flipcams and laptops. We wanted to find out what was easy to use and gave good results.

When we listened back, the wind was making itself heard even when it wasn’t the focus of the recording. Sometimes we could hear heavy breathing from the person who was making the recording.

We thought about the technical aspects of recording and also thought about the aesthetic/ creative nature of their results.

Experiments followed -recording with

1 -just a mic

2 -with a glove over the mic

3 -with a hat over the mic

4 -with a kindle

Listening back it was possible for the class to make out differences between the recordings made with different variations. I was really impressed with their listening. It would be great if they had access to a proper windjammer but these things are helping.
